Saudi Arabia Affirms That Strikes by Saudi Armed Forces, in Coordination with U.S. Central Command Against Specific Targets in Iraq Were Under the Right of Self-Defense Guaranteed by International Law

Further to the two statements issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, July 27, 2026, and Tuesday, July 28, 2026, regarding the reprehensible drone attacks carried out against the Kingdom by Iran-backed militias in Iraq, and reaffirming the Kingdom’s determination to deter the perpetrators and its right to respond, the Ministry affirms that this aggressive course pursued by the Iran-backed terrorist militias in Iraq came at a time when the Kingdom was exerting every effort to help de-escalate tensions in the region in a manner that preserves its security and stability. Instead, these Iran-backed terrorist militias chose an irresponsible path of escalation, violated international law, and disregarded the obligations of Islamic brotherhood, including adherence to the principles of good neighborliness.

 The Kingdom further affirms that the strikes carried out today, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by the Saudi Armed Forces, in coordination with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), against specific targets within the territory of the Republic of Iraq linked to the attacks on the Kingdom’s petroleum facilities, were undertaken in the exercise of the inherent right of self-defense as recognized under international law pursuant to Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations.

 The Kingdom also affirms that it does not seek escalation. However, should it be subjected to any further attacks, it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and protect its citizens and national assets.
