NCW Participates in First Arab Scientific Workshop on Seagrasses in Abu Dhabi

The National Center for Wildlife (NCW) participated in the first Arab scientific workshop on seagrasses, held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from April 30 to May 1. The event was organized by Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, and the Dugong Memorandum of Understanding (Dugong MoU) under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

During the workshop, NCW delivered a presentation about the Kingdom's efforts in monitoring the status of seagrasses and associated biodiversity, as well as national initiatives to protect and conserve marine ecosystems within Saudi Arabia's territorial waters. These efforts reflect the center’s commitment to supporting regional initiatives and boosting Arab and international environmental cooperation.

The workshop saw wide participation from experts and representatives from regional environmental organizations. Participants discussed the current status of seagrasses in the region, research gaps, and environmental challenges, in addition to reviewing scientific and administrative solutions to ensure the sustainability of these sensitive marine habitats.

The event also explored opportunities for regional cooperation in environmental monitoring, data and expertise exchange, capacity building, and enhancing community awareness of the ecological and economic importance of seagrasses.
