Peregrine Falcon Migration Rekindles Traditional Trapping Season in Northern Borders

October marks the start of the Shaheen (Peregrine) falcon's annual fall migration, reviving a cherished heritage season among falconers and trappers across Northern Borders Region.

The expansive Al-Hammad Desert stands out as a prime destination for trappers due to its strategic position along migratory flight corridors. Falconry enthusiast Ahmed Al-Banaqi noted that preparations begin early with setting up camps and readying specialized nets and gear. Trappers head into the field during two key daily periods—from dawn through the morning and again shortly before sunset—relying on patience, tracking skills, and deep familiarity with migratory routes.

To support the practice and preserve national falconry heritage, the National Center for Falcons organizes a designated falcon auction coinciding with the season. The event receives birds captured nationwide and provides trappers with professional support services to showcase and sell their falcons in a competitive live auction.
